How to look after a Terrarium

The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Terrarium

Creating a terrarium brings a little bit of the natural world into your living space, offering both beauty and a sense of calm. However, to ensure your miniature ecosystem thrives, it requires some occasional care and maintenance. This guide will give you the essential steps and tips to keep your terrarium looking its best!

1. Lighting: Find the Sweet Spot

Terrariums need the appropriate amount of light, but of course, the amount varies depending on the plants inside.

Most terrarium plants prefer bright, indirect light because direct sunlight can be too intense, causing plants to become sad and perish, whereas too little light can hinder their growth and cause them to, well, perish as well.

It is best to ensure your terrarium is near a window that will receive a good level of indirect light for the best results. Keep an eye on it as time goes on, you’ll know how it’s feeling!

2. Watering: Less is More

Overwatering is a common mistake in terrarium care. The enclosed nature of terrariums means they retain moisture for longer, sometimes indefinitely! Checking the soil moisture level before watering is a sure indication of your next move – it should feel slightly damp, but not particularly wet.

For closed terrariums, a light mist at most every two to four weeks is often enough. Open terrariums however may require watering more frequently, but always allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. No terrarium is the same, so treat yours as it shows you its needs.

3. Ventilation: Breathe Easy Closed

Sometimes, terrariums benefit from occasional opening to let fresh air circulate which can prevent mold growth. If you start to notice condensation covering the entire inner glass each day, then it’s time to open the lid for a few hours. This will help control the moisture level and keeps the air inside nice and fresh.

Alternatively, you can assist the process by lightly wiping the inside of the glass. This is also a good way to keep it clean…

4. Cleaning: Clarity is Key

Keeping the glass clean both inside, and out, not only keeps it looking nice, but it will also ensure your terrarium plants receive enough light for healthy growth. Wiping the interior with a soft cloth to remove dirt or algae buildup might be needed occasionally, keep a keen eye on the glass by the soil line, this is generally where the build up will begin.

Cleaning the exterior as well glass not only improves visibility but also enhances the terrarium’s shining enchantment!

5. Pruning: Shape and Health

Checking out the plants often for dead or overgrown foliage, and then pruning, is something you should do as often as you deem necessary, however remember that over pruning can hurt your plant.

Removing dead elements from plants can help assist growth, however if you see any fallen foliage, laying on the soil, you can let its nutrients recycle in the ecosystem – if you want that less tidy and more natural look!.

However if a tidy look is your thing, doing this not only keeps your terrarium looking clean, but also will also promote healthy growth and prevent disease. Of course, pruning overgrown plants also helps maintain the miniature landscape’s scale and balance.

6. Fertilizing: A Gentle Touch

Terrarium plants generally require minimal additional fertilization, but If you do choose to fertilize, do so sparingly. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer at about half the recommended strength, and apply it with something like a pipet so you can direct the growth boost at the required plants.

Bear in mind, over-fertilizing can lead to excessive growth, which could cause one plant to dominate the whole terrarium, which of course will upset the delicate balance of your mini ecosystem!.

7. Pest Control: Prevention and Cure

An even closer look into your terrarium plants and soil regularly not only provides a deeper perspective, as if you’re an insect, but also allows you to check for signs of pests.

Mini-mini critters such as aphids or fungus gnats can always appear in your terrariums, there is really no avoiding it and it’s the way of the world, even in your tiny one!. Early detection, like with anything, is the key to preventing a nightmare infestation.

If pests are discovered, you should try your best to isolate the affected plant and treat it with an appropriate mild pesticide, or (our preferred method) a natural remedy like neem oil.

8. Placement: Consider the Environment

Of course you want your terrarium to exist in a spot that looks best, maybe even as a centerpiece in the room, however you need to consider a bit about the environmental conditions in your home, such as temperature fluctuations and humidity levels, and place your terrarium accordingly.

Avoid placing the mini world near such things like heating vents, air conditioners, or cold drafts, as extreme temperature changes can stress the plants like in the big world.

Overall

Caring for a terrarium is a satisfying hobby that connects you with your own little slice of nature, and will allow you endless creative satisfaction. By following the above simple guidelines, you can ensure your terrarium remains a vibrant, thriving tiny world for years to come. Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or a budding plant enthusiast, a terrarium is a beautiful addition to any space, requiring just a bit of knowledge and attention to flourish.

Be warned though – one terrarium is never enough, and once you’ve made your first you will inevitably create your next, and next, and next! You will start to look at every day items with a new perspective,  giving your jam jars a second look and extended thought, wondering what kind of little world you can create inside!
